Kakuni is braised pork cooked in sake and soy sauce. There are dishes similar to it in Chinese food as well. After making Kakuni, you can enjoy it many ways. It's great with white rice or can be served as an appetizer as well. You can also put it in ramen and if there are any leftovers, chop it up and cook it in fried rice.
Okonomiyaki (aka Japanese pizza) is a Japanese pancake dish including a variety of ingredients and usually associated with Osaka and Hiroshima areas (West) of Japan. Okonomi means "what you like" and Yaki means "grilled." Regardless of the region and style, the main ingredients is always cabbage. This particular recipe is from my friend who's originally from Hiroshima.
Besides some of the more popular Japanese dishes you will find in your local Japanese restaurants, I also want to share Japanese home styled cooking. With this particular dish, the combination of pork, eggplant, and Shiso leaf is just simply, amazing. It's a very easy dish to prepare, but you will be surprised with the complexity of the flavors it offers.
My husband introduced me to the wonderful taste of Taiwanese Satay sauce after we got married. Japanese hotpot is usually cooked in a flavored broth and the food is enjoyed as is. Taiwanese hotpot is different because not only is it cooked in a flavored broth, the food is also dipped into the hotpot dipping sauce after cooking to enjoy. The taste is pretty amazing blending in the perfect amount of spice mixed in with sesame oil, soy sauce, and vinegar. If you enjoy Thai and other Southeast Asian food, you'll probably love the dipping sauce just like me.
My family loves eating fresh made Gyoza. It's the one of the dish I can always count on my kids eating without resorting to threats or bribes. Be creative with the dipping sauce by testing with ginger, green onion, daikon, yuzu, or sesame oil. Have a Gyoza wrapping party tonight and find out who is the most talented at wrapping Gyoza.
I believe different types of dish has the power to change how people feel. When it's hot and sunny outside, the cool crisp salad tastes extra refreshing. Personally, whenever the weather is cold and raining I always crave some comfort food. This easy to prepare cream penne pasta will quickly warm you up. It's easy and simple but it tastes goooood! My kids had seconds or thirds and they both said "Hmmmm it's yummy!!" Think bacon, pasta, cabbage, and cheese broiled in the oil.
Flavorful and spicy tofu dish made with garlic, ginger, and ground pork.
Yaki Udon is stir fried udon noodles and the sauce used to flavor the dish varies depending on the household. My mom uses Mentsuyu as main flavor, so I cook Yaki Udon same way. I remember my mom never measures her ingredients but her Yaki Udon always turns out delicious. Yaki Udon is a quick and easy dish to make with typical ingredients you might already have in the fridge.
My kids love deep-fried crispy food so we usually have some kind of deep-fried dish once a week. I didn't like deep frying at home before because the whole house will start to smell. But when I saw the kids looked forward to the food and ate very well with smile, I started to care less about the smell. It is more important that they enjoy good food. For this dish I used fish sauce, one of my favorite condiments, instead of typical Japanese seasonings and I made it more like South East Asian flavor. This can be a good appetizer dish too.
