Eggplant with Sesame Ponzu Sauce

September 12, 2011

Ponzu sauce is very versatile, it’s probably best known as the dipping sauce for Japanese shabu shabu. It’s also popular with thinly sliced halibut or sea bream sashimi. I enjoy experimenting with ponzu sauce and found it goes really well with pan fried eggplants. Garnish with shiso to add more complexity to this delicious vegetarian recipe.

During Japan’s hot warm summer, it’s always nice to enjoy cold food such as zaru soba and cold tofu. The delicate taste of chilled tofu mixed with bonito flake and a splash of soy sauce seems to cool off the summer heat, even just a bit.

I caught a slight cold over the weekend and wanted some warm comfort food. In Japan, instead of chicken noodle we eat simple kitsune udon to recover our strength. Sipping the natural dashi broth and enjoying the warm udon noodles, I think I already feel better.

My favorite part about going to Chinese restaurants is the complimentary dessert soups they serve at the end of the meal. I love sweets and it’s definitely one of my weakness. Among all the dessert soups, my two favorites are red bean and taro tapioca. I was so excited to find this recipe and share with my reader. Enjoy.

Green Bean Shiraae

It’s been a while since I posted a side dish so I want to share a popular green bean recipe. Side dishes (Osouzai, お惣菜) are predominately vegetables. As I had mentioned in my previous posts, typical Japanese meal consists of a bowl of rice, a bowl of miso soup, the main dish, and 1-2 side dishes. A popular way to prepare side dish is Shiraae, mixing lightly-cooked vegetables with crumbled tofu, miso, and sesame seeds. Spinach and green beans are commonly used for Shira-ae dish.

Steamed Cake

I am not much of a baker for someone who spends quite a bit of time in the kitchen. Maybe it’s because most bakeries in Japan are simply amazing so we don’t try to make too many dessert at home. There’s a bakery near my house in Yokohama where the fresh cream taste just like heaven. When my friend Ellena asked me if I knew how to make Japanese steamed bread (Mushi Pan), I went to search for a recipe that looked yummy. After the snack judges in the house (my two children) approved, I am happy to share this recipe.

The Japanese love mayo, we enjoy mayo with a wide variety of Japanese food ranging from deep fried food, okonomiyaki (Japanese Pizza), Yakisoba (Japanese stir fry noodle), sushi, to salad. This simple apple salad is mayo based but it is super yummy. The tartness of fresh apple mixed in with raisin and just a bit of lemon balances out the mayo perfectly.

Shiso Garlic Soy Sauce

I got the recipe for my favorite flavored soy sauce, Shiso Garlic Soy Sauce from Cookpad.com. This original recipe created a huge sensation in Japan a couple years ago. This recipe has only 3 ingredients, but the combination of Shiso, garlic, and soy sauce is pretty amazing. I love this sauce so much that I always keep replenishing the ingredients so it’s always ready to go when I need it.
