I hope everyone is having a great long weekend so far (it’s Memorial Day Weekend in the US). Thank you all for your kind messages and I wish I could say we are getting better, but my kids and I are still sick. I don’t know why it’s taking me so long to recover. My entire body aches so horribly and I just can’t get better despite my effort to get well. After all I’m becoming 35 this year and I think age has started to affect my body more. I hope none of readers are sick like us and hope you are having a great weekend with family and friends.
Before moving on to today’s recipe, I want to thank CG at Cooking-Gallery, Lyn at My Lil Messy & Cheeky, Chris at Gourmet Fashion, and Sandra at Sweet Sensation for passing me blog awards. I am sincerely honored that you thought of me and Just One Cookbook and I thank you so much for giving me all these awards!
I’m sorry I’ve been very slow in responses and haven’t been able to visit your blog if you are my blogger friends. I’ll slowly come around and check your delicious food. Take good care everyone and have a great week ahead!
Ingredients:
- 1 pkg (½ lb) thinly sliced beef (use a package labeled as “Komagire” or “Shabu Shabu” meat)
- 24 baby carrots (depends on the numbers of sliced meat - today I use 1 ½ carrot)
- Salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Corn starch
- 1 Tbsp. Mirin
- 1 Tbsp. soy sauce
Instructions:
- Combine Sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
- Cut carrots in half or quarters and put them in a microwave-safe container. Cover the carrots with water and microwave for 3-4 minutes (depending on the thickness).
- Dust with salt and pepper over the meat. Place 2-3 carrot pieces on each sliced beef and roll them up.
- Dredge each roll in corn starch and remove excesses.
- In a non-stick frying pan, heat oil on medium high heat and cook the rolls until browned.
- Cover and cook for 1.5-2 minutes, or until inside the meat is fully cooked.
- Pour the Sauce over and coat the rolls with sauce by shifting the pan or rotating them with chopsticks. When the sauce gets thicken, turn off the heat and transfer to a plate.
- For how to make the flower petal carrot (on top of beef rolls), please check HERE.
Enjoy!
Hi, I'm Nami. Thanks for stopping by Just One Cookbook. You can read little bit more about me

These look so good! Please feel better soon. Sometimes it takes a while for these change of season bugs to go away.
Hi Maris! I totally agree. I found out some of my friends are also sick. SF has been pretty cold and cloudy…and going to rain this weekend as well. Arh… can’t wait for the summer. Thanks for visiting my blog!
Hi Nami! Congrats on all your awards! You really deserved them as we can see how much patience and efforts you put in here

I think probably you really need to take a gd rest. Do take gd care and wish you and your kids a speedy recovery!
This dish is easy (I love easy, fast recipes! LOL) and ever since I bought the bottle of mirin for the Tamagoyaki, I’m beginning to love all kinda dishes that uses mirin (coz of it’s special mild sweet taste)!
I’m so sorry to hear that you and your kids are still sick.
Thanks Lyn! Oh yes, this dish is super easy. Just roll it and fry.
Teriyaki flavor is always sake + soy sauce + mirin (or sugar), so now you can make it your own teriyaki sauce, more authentic than those teriyaki sauce in a bottle! Thank you so much for your concern. I wish I can say we’re better….I hate to be sick. At least I want my kids to get better first… Thank you for your sweet words Lyn!
You’re welcome Nami!
Ohh no, I didn’t know you guys are sick! I hope you recover soon! My eldest daughter has the flu too, but she’s getting better!
This beef recipe sounds lovely and it looks really nice! Your presentation is outstanding as always!
Hi Manu! Thank you. It’s so hard when you are sick and take care of kids. I just hope that my kids will get better first. It’s hard to see them sick. When I went to preschool the other day, almost everyone was sick (coughing and runny nose). No wonder. I can’t prevent my kids to get sick from school…unless I keep them home…which is not realistic. Hopefully they will get stronger. I hope your daughter will fully recover soon so you get some rest and relief.
I like them so much… very healthy rolls, and very tasty, too
Thanks Giulia!
PS. I really hope that you recover soon (and your kids as well)
Thanks Giulia for sweet comments here and facebook etc. Big hugs!
I love love love your recipe Nami!..
I will have to get some mirin as soon as possible
Thanks Sawsan! I love we’re syncing with carrot recipe.
Japanese food requires mirin in most of dishes. It’s basically alternate/substitute for sugar, but more mild taste.
Loves really yummy. I’m sure it’s perfect with a bowl of steaming hot rice
Hi Shaz! Yes it is! I can eat 2 bowls easily.
I am sorry to hear that all of you are still sick . It is never easy especially with kids, and I wish you fast recovery!
Your dish looks very tasty, I wish I could pick it up of the screen and eat it, that how awesome it look to me! Very tempting!:)
Photo are fantastic Nami! Nicely done!!!
Have a great Monday!!!
Hi Sandra! Yeah…I just hope that my kids will recover first, then naturally I’ll get better…I hope? But there are so many sick kids in school that I wonder if my kids will get sick again…I’m becoming more paranoid. Haha. Thanks for nice compliment about this dish! I hope you are having a great week so far.
Hi Nami, 1st congrats on all the lovely awards that had being passed to you and your blog. 2nd hope that you will get well soon. And so nice of you sharing this dish now I know what to do with my baby carrots sitting in the veggie compartment
Thank you Ellena! Kids usually eat more of this if I don’t include green beans. Typical dish includes both carrot and green bean (I also have a recipe in my blog). I hope you will like it!
Very interesting, its a good way to get children to eat carrots by hiding it inside rolled meat. Hope you get well soon. Its not age, its probably change in weather or natures way of telling you to have a rest!
Hi Three-Cookies! Yes, I always think of a way to “hide” veggies.
Haha…I feel I get tired very easily though. Maybe my two little kids driving me crazy everyday making me tired. But it’s true, the weather in SF has been so cold and cloudy. I can’t wait for the summer to come!
These look very good! I love how most of the meat you use is super thinly cut, I am using more and more thin cuts lately and I have to say I like them much more!
The good part about being sick is that you can be lazy without feeling guilty! Take your time to get better and just rest, we will wait until you fell in top shape again!
Thanks Pola! Japanese dish use a lot of thin meats. The amount of meat in dish is just perfect for me. Thanks for your kind words Pola!
I hope you and your kids get well soon… it must be something to do with the change in weather and not your age! Wait till you’re as old as me, Nami, then you will really know what aches and pain mean..haha.
As for this beef roll recipe, I love how it is so simple and yet so delicious-looking! You have that uncanny ability to seduce us all with your food. No wonder you have received so many awards!
Thank you Maya! Haha thank you for saying it’s not my age. I realized I don’t have much energy like before, but following 2 kids all day long also makes me tired too (not just the age). Hehee. Thank you for sweet message Maya!
Congratulations on your well-deserved awards. There will be many more for a blog of this caliber. Your rolls look wonderful and I love the way the carrots have been used. I hope you have a great day. Blessings…Mary
Thank you Mary! I make this dish when I have too many baby carrots left…but like this time I even used regular carrots to make this dish too! Kids love it!
This looks so good! Great use for shabu shabu meat! (I love shabu shabu and hot pot!). Back home in New York the Japanese groceries have this cut of meat. Here I think I would have to cut it myself and/or pound it thin. Either way, looks delish! Feel better!!!
Hi Katherine! Oh our family love Shabu Shabu and we eat like once a week in winter (plus I don’t have to “cook”, you know). I know…thin meat is always the problem for cooking Japanese food. I used to live far away from a Japanese market and it wasn’t easy for me to cook Japanese (I ate a lot of chicken then). Thank you for your kind words. I’ll focus to get better.
Nami, as always, this looks great! My mom used to make this, but with gobo and unfortunately, I don’t really like gobo
I never thought of using carrots! I’ve made with asparagus in the past, but I will have to try with carrots. I love that you have a whole page on cutting techniques too!
Hi Kayo-san.
I know carrot and green bean is the most typical beef rolls and I already have the recipe in my blog too. My kids definitely prefer this one over one with “green”. Sigh. Thanks for the compliment on cutting technique page… I really wanted to show how we cut…simply because…I can’t explain so well in words, so I thought pictures show it better. Oh well, but the name of each cut is probably too difficult for everyone to remember, so I kind of gave up on using those names…. I wouldn’t remember if they are written in foreign language too. So I just use English to explain how to cut after all. Haha. I kept that page for someone who wants to know the name of cutting in Japanese. =P
This just looks so good. Quick and easy, too. There’s a Filipino dish similar to this but is made with thicker slices of meat so takes very long to cook. I’m so sorry to hear that you and the kids are still unwell. Not feeling too great myself and have come across some bloggers who are feeling the same. Get well, Nami and kids.
Thanks Adora! I didn’t know Filipino has similar dish. That’s nice to know! Our meat is so thin….that’s why most people have a difficulty finding the perfect meat. I used to live far from a Japanese store and it was tough. I can’t cut this thin by myself. Thanks for your kind words. We hope to recover soon as we are tired of being sick! How are you feeling? I definitely hope you aren’t getting sick. >_<
Oh Nami you poor thing! I am so sorry to hear you and your kids are still not feeling well. I have started giving Trini this syrup called Planetary Herbals Well Child, it’s suppose to help with immune system. I also take Airborne at the first sign of sickness, not sure whether you are into natural remedies, but if you are, these have been helpful for us.
Now onto the recipe. This looks soooo yummy and simple! Have to try it in the near future! Now take care and hope you feel better real soon!
Thank you Cindy. I hate to be sick this long Cindy. I can’t believe it. I saw so many sick kids in school and now I’m paranoid if they bring more sick back again after they get better. Ugh! I take Airborne too. I am not familiar with Planetary Herbals Well Child, and I’m going to look into that. Thank you for the useful info. I greatly appreciate it!!! It’s nice to have a mommy friend who has an older kid than mine, so you’ve been through a lot more than me. Thank you!!!
Another one of our family’s favorites although I have not made this for a while now. I normally use green beans and carrots together. Blogging has it disadvantages sometimes as I seldom repeat a dish even though it is very good. You poor thing! I hope you get well soon.
Hi Biren! Yep you really know real Japanese food!! I’m so happy talking to you. The most common beef roll has carrot and green beans. I also have that recipe in my blog. My kids definitely prefer this one as they don’t see “green” in the meat. Thanks for your kind word. I’m praying myself my kids and I get better soon. Haha…..sigh.
Nami, the beef and carrots rolls look like such a homely dish, a kind of comfort food everyone must love. I am sure I’ll steal your recipe soon. I have recently bought a magic knife, which allows me to cut 2 mm thin meat slices, so I won’t be forced to freeze the meat like I did before. I have just had a look at the cutting methods page. It is very impressing. I must try for example rangiri one day.
Don’t worry about blog visits or responses and don’t overwork yourself. I keep my fingers crossed for your quick recovery!
I’m so sorry you still feel bad
Hi Sissi! I’m sure you enjoy cooking this easy and yummy dish Sissi.
Oh I’m so curious about your “magic” knife! You really don’t have to freeze the meat and cut into 2mm? That’s pretty amazing! Do let me know about it!
Thank you for your sweet word. I’m doing my best to get better…hopefully kids first. Thank you again!
All the best recovery wishes to you and your family, Nami! I hope it wasn’t too much to do this wonderful cooking for us on top of it! But this makes me dig into it right away again! And what delighted me the most was to see a CARROT FLOWER on top of it!
Thank you Kathy for your sweet words.
This post was my backup (so as this week’s)…. I realized it’s nice to have backups because no one expected this kind of long sickness! Duhhhhh…. I’m so happy you realized the carrot flower because I saw in your post and remember about this backup post.
Of course I noticed the carrot flowers!
And I also have draft posts at hand for situations like this.
I am sorry to hear that you and your children are still not completely well….:(. I absolutely despise being sick (well, who doesn’t?;)), especially because once I catch a cold the chance that I’d have that for a long, long time is very high. Anyway, I actually just want to say that your beef rolls look wonderful, I’ve seen something like this in Japanese bento books too, and often with both carrots and green beans (or asparagus). Unfortunately it’s very hard to buy thinly sliced beef like this here, it does look very very yummy though
)! Get well soon, all of you…!
Hi CG! Thanks for your kind words. I know…I usually don’t catch cold, but it looks like when I get it, it takes a long time to recover. When I was 20s, I was so proud that I don’t get sick. Now my kids bring sickness from school all the time. >_< Yes, these beef rolls are very very common dish (and the carrots & green beans combination). I have this recipe in my blog too, but my kids prefer carrots only because they don't see anything green in this. Haha. I can imagine it's hard to find thinly sliced meat in "most" of the places…. You need a quite number of Japanese populations for thinly sliced meat. Hehee. Thank you again CG!
Oh, rats…I was hoping you’d be feeling a lot better by now. I think there’s just a block of years when your children are young where you can count on being sick a lot. You are certainly not falling apart at the young age of 35!
Your beef looks marvelous…the flavors sound truly delish!
Hi Lizzy!… yeah “rats” is totally the word. I’m so tired of being sick… But you are right. There are so many sick kids in my son’s school that I just don’t know how to protect him from getting all the sickness from school. We just have to endure a couple of more years till their immune system is better…. Arrrhh… Haha I do hope it’s not the age…but I feel my body is falling apart. I know why I am not exercising… sigh. Thanks for your sweet comment Lizzy!
Wow, Nami! These beef rolls are very simple to make yet they look very delicious. Sorry about you and your kids not feeling well. Hope you guys get better soon. Take care.
Thank you Ray! We’re a little bit better than earlier this week…I think? Geez, it’s been so long and we can’t wait to feel better! Thanks for visiting my blog.
This look simply delicious! I hope your kids will get well soon,
Thank you Sonia!
You poor thing, I hope you start to feel better soon!! My weekend has been busy, yet relaxing. I hope yours is going well in beautiful CA!
Jim and I are reading your blog together and we both think the baby carrot beef rolls look delish!
Oh Allie! I was so happy to hear you AND JIM read my blog! Hi Jim! Thanks for following my blog with Allie. You are one lucky man who ate the biggest burger cake!
Thanks Allie for your kind words. I hope my kids will get better first then I will get well soon… The weather in SF has been very cloudy, cold, and raining! We haven’t felt the “summer” yet. Hope your area is nice and sunny!
Take care of kids & yourself Nami.I had a fun weekend..never knew where the 3 days flied away! These rolls look terrific..A lovely combo of meat and vegetables. How do u have pictures of all steps? You have lot of patience
Thanks Tanvi! I know… step-by-step pictures slowed me down but I feel this is the only way for people to see how easy it is rather than just reading it. I’m more visual person so my own recipes help myself Hehehe. I hope you had a great 3 day weekend.
What a great idea! I love my sakura flower cutter, shaper too.. aren’t they a hoot?
Hi Elle Marie! Yeah, these vegetable cutters are essential items for bento making and a great technique for kids to eat veggies.
these look great! hope you and the rest of your family feel better soon!
You’re always thoughtful. Thank you Kat.
Hope you and the kids recover fast. I remember I got sick for the longest time (more than 2 months!!!) just this winter. Urgghhhh…..
Thank you Tigerfish! Really, 2 months!? I definitely hope mine won’t last 2 months… it’s going to last 2 weeks for sure…. Ugghhhhh… don’t you think it’s about time to get sun here? I heard it’s going to rain this weekend too.
Oh no Nami, I am so sorry to hear that you are all not feeling better! you really are remarkable to still be able to put such a beautiful and delicious post together.
Mandy
Thanks Mandy! Finally I feel I’m getting better this morning. My kids are still sick and the weather in SF is horrible (raining). I hope we will get better before the weather gets nice and sunny.
Haha… I’m glad I kept the backup recipes for emergency… I kept several just in case…and I totally needed it since I haven’t been cooking! =P
This one will be a perfect item for kid’s lunch box! Your kids are very lucky to have you as their mother ; )
Hi Mika-san! Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I don’t need to make lunch box for my kids yet. I grew up seeing this in my lunch box though.
It’s such a common dish we see in obento. Thanks for visiting!
I love the presentation.with small carrot flower, it is so elegant and yummy.
Thank you Daksha! Kids enjoy seeing those flower shape carrot and it’s easier to make them eat everything.
I hope you feel better soon Nami!! Props for still taking time out to work on your blog, thats dedication
These remind me of negamaki! Which I LOVE. I think I will definitely have to try these. I am going to Jerusalem tomorrow and there is an Asian specialty store there. I will most definitely be stocking up on goodies so I can make some of your wonderful recipes I have bookmarked! Yay!!
Hi Beth! Thank you so much for your kind words. This morning I finally felt a little better so I’m catching up everything that I left behind! So much to do! >_< Haha, I do have emergency posts that I kept for days like this, and I haven't cooked for a while so I'm using those posts that I kept. =P Hopefully I can start cooking next week! I saw on Katherine's post that you guys are hanging out together. TOTALLY jealous!
Have fun!!!
Yes! Katherine and I are both living here in Be’er Sheva and do a lot together. Its so great to have a good friend who has the same passion as you do!! If you ever come to the middle east you will have to come to all the wonderful markets with us!
I know how nice it is to have a friend from own country when you live abroad. Both of you guys are foodie and it must be fun! Oh yeah I wish! It sounds so much fun…but I can’t imagine bringing my kids! Haha. I enjoy reading what you two are exploring.
Nami, these look delicious! I hope you and your kids recover fully soon..glad to see a new post from you
Have a good rest!
Thank you Jen! I’m trying really hard to get well so I can cook again!
These look divine, especially when they are seared so nicely. I can imagine the sweetness from the baby carrots too!
Hi C & MSP! Thanks! It’s easy and delicious and the best part is….my kids love this and eat carrots!
Oh, ugh, I am sorry to hear that you are still sick! And over a holiday weekend too. I do love these rolls, they look delicious!
Thanks Carolyn! I hate to be sick and have to take care of sick kids! Well you have 3 small kids so I’m sure you know “family sick” means. Yikes! Thanks for your compliment on my baby carrot beef rolls.
Now I have to catch up on your posts that I’ve missed!
Nami, what a great recipe…love the simplicity of this beef rolls and the nice thing is that I have all the ingredients at home…feel better…and hope you have a better week
Thanks Juliana! I finally feel a bit better today although my kids are still sick. It’s like a bad cycle at home. One gets better but get another cold from school and get sick again, give to someone, and go around and around…grrrrrrr! Thanks for visiting me.
You can always catch up on your reading. What’s important is that you take the time to rest and feel better. We’ll be here.
Thanks Sandra! I’m a bit better today so I started to catch up on reading finally… Thanks for being so sweet.
Hi Nami! Things have finally been winding down for Jon and me and we finally got around to posting those awards you gave to us a few months ago! We can’t thank you enough for that! Also, I hope you recover quickly! It’s hard to recover from a sickness if you are also suffering from allergies this season in the Bay Area!
Thanks Jackie! I’m so happy you are back on writing posts on your blog and thanks for letting me know! It’s raining and cold…and kids in school are all sick! I hope you don’t get sick from the kids like me while spending all day with the kids…
I’ve been so occupied with a lot of things and I haven’t been able to do a lot of blog visiting lately so it’s only now that I came to know that you are sick. I’m so sorry, Nami! I hope you are all feeling better by now.
Your beef rolls look so delicious but sounds so easy to make…I’ll definitely try this!
Hi Tina! Oh no worries… I’ve been so sick that I couldn’t go anyone’s blog for a long time too…. This morning I feel a lot better so I’m trying to catch up. I’m so happy to see that you and your girls had so much fun at the tea party birthday celebration. You gave me a good idea for my daughter….still young but eventually! But I’m not so sure if I can pull off what you did. You are just amazing preparing all those food!!!! Such a great mom Tina!
Nami, I hope you are feeling better now! I was sick this weekend too, but I am doing good now, thank God! I hate being sick… These beef rolls look great! I love how easy they are, and this would be a great way to get the meat-loving, veggie-hating people to get some carrots in
Thanks for sharing… Oh and congrats on those awards! You deserve them all!
Hi Marsha! Thanks for your kind words. I know I hate being sick too. I was wishing to lose weight and stay in bed by catching a cold before actually getting sick (how weird am I?), but oh boy, I’m not losing weight at all AND I’m busy taking care of sick kids too! I hope you are fully recovered. Thank you for visiting.
Sorry to hear you all are feeling so poorly. We just went through something similar- took forever to get over. Hope you all get well soon. I love the recipe- unusual and looks really yummy! I never heard of mirin sauce- will have to keep my eyes open for that.
Hi Sarah! Oh my goodness I feel sorry for anyone who was/is sick for a long time. It’s almost 2 weeks and I really need to get better. Thank you for your kind words! Mirin is a great substitute for sugar as it’s very mild sweetness to it. It’s the key ingredient for Japanese food – Teriyaki sauce is made of soy sauce + mirin + sake.
Thank you Kristen! Oh yes, IF the weather was nice I would have even felt more frustrated. Unfortunately the weather here is pretty awful. Cold and cloudy (some sunshine but not whole a lot)…and rain! I need to get better before it becomes good weather!
These rolls are super cool Nami! The contrast in flavor and texture is pretty genius!
Thanks Tiffany!
Hi Jill! Thanks… This morning I’m feeling a bit better. I hate being sick, it’s not fun. When I was well, I was wishing only way for me to stay in bed and lose weight is to get sick. I shouldn’t have wished that! I am not losing any weight and I still have to take cake of my sick kids. Duhhhh. Yes you are right, I will be taking care of myself better. But lots of kids in school are sick and oh my….this is a life of having preschool kids. Thanks for your advice to be “Jilled”…haha! Love it.
Thanks Maria! Yes, your partner is Japanese so he must have eaten this growing up. I hope he’ll enjoy it!
Hi Kate! Actually we call this teriyaki sauce. It’s usually made of Mirin + soy sauce + sake. Each family has different amount for each, but these 3 are most common condiments for Japanese food.
Thank you for visiting!
I am so happy to have found your blog! Your food looks incredible and I can’t wait to try some of your dishes…Starting with this recipe for Baby Carrot Beef Rolls
Hi Shawn! Thank you so much for stopping by my blog. I hope you like this dish!
These are so cute Nami! What a fun appetizer or dish for the kiddies since they have a nice surprise inside.
Thanks Lindsey! Yes, my kids tend to eat veggies when they are “hidden” and not so obvious! Still easy to trick.
These looks absolutely amazing!!!! I’ve never seen anything like this before but I sure would love to try it!
Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment. Japanese food use a lot of super thin slice meat, and it’s very common to roll veggies like this. It’s a nice combination of meat and veggie, and easier for kids to eat veggies.
Hey Namiko,
I made these last Friday! They turned out good! I was wondering what kind of soy sauce you used? I used kikkoman, the original (dark), would there have been a difference if I used light?
I actually forgot to drench them in cornstarch but it still turned out yummy! I might try putting mushrooms next time.. but this is a keeper
Hi Bing! Thank you so much for leaving a comment here.
I”m glad you liked this dish. I use Japanese organic soy sauce (imported from Japan). We don’t have dark or light soy sauce. Only option we have is either regular or less sodium. I know Chinese soy sauce has dark (which seems very thicker sauce than Japanese regular soy sauce) and light. If you used Kikkoman, then I assume you have regular kind. I don’t have light soy sauce at home so I am not sure… should work if the taste is same/similar. If you apply corn starch to the meat, the sauce gets thicken. Also, corn starch makes the meat softer so it’s nice texture when you bite to it. We sometimes cook without it too, so that’s okay.
Thank you again for cooking this dish!
Droooollll – this looks great! I’m totally a lazy cook, and this definitely looks like something I can handle.
Hi Monkey! Thank you. It’s veggie and meat in one dish! We put various veggies in it and we change the sauce… so we have many variations with this cooking method. Thanks for visiting!
This looks absolutely delicious…love it !!!!
