Happy New Year to all my dearest readers!
I hope you had a wonderful New Year celebration with your friends and family. The New Years (Shogatsu) is one of the most important annual festivals in Japan, probably equivalent to Christmas or Thanksgiving in the US. We follow unique customs including eating special food called Osechi, and decorate the house and entry way to the house with special decorations. One of the decorations we decorate inside the house (see the picture above) is called Kagami Mochi, which literally means “mirror rice cake”. It is considered to bring good luck and prosperity in the near year.
Kagami Mochi is made from two rice cakes of different sizes with the smaller one placed over the larger one. The mochi are placed on a konbu sheet, a symbol of pleasure and joy. The decorative mochi is taken out on January 11 and hammered into pieces for Ozoni or traditional Mochi soup. It is extremely unlucky to cut Kagami Mochi with a knife so people break it into smaller pieces with a hammer.
This year we couldn’t get to celebrate Japanese New Years in the traditional way since my mom is visiting from Japan and we are in San Diego for a short vacation. My children had a blast spending the past few days in all the local attractions like LEGOLAND, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, San Diego Zoo, and Sea World.
I just wanted to take a moment and say a special thank you at the beginning of the new year. I’m thankful for your comments and emails, your encouragement, and finally your support. I started my blog last year without knowing what a “blog” is. I had no audience besides my husband, a couple of friends, and myself back then. My blog evolved throughout the past year, and without you, I wouldn’t be able to celebrate the winning of CBS San Francisco’s Most Valuable Blogger 2011 and 1st Blogiversary today!!
I wish to meet each one of you to thank you, but that’s not possible, so I prepared this giveaway in a token of appreciation. Thank you from bottom of my heart!

How could I not take part in your giveaway? And happy happy happy blogiversary!!
I just twitted about your giveaway!
I just came across your blog last week. And I love it! ESpecially like your pantry section. Having pictures of the ingredients have been a real help. And love it when you mention the brand that you like to use. I just show the pictures to the folks at the Japanese market! Can’t wait to see what year 2 will bring!
Congrats. I can’t think of anything to improve your blog. Explanations and photos are always very clear and easy to understand. Love the ‘How To’ page. Maybe focus on using fruits and veggies that are in season, especially during summer months. Thanks

Hi Nami, Happy 1st Blogiversary! I can’t believe that you just set up this blog one year ago! I also started blogging about a year ago. Just One Cookbook is one of my favorite food blogs that I’ve discovered during the past year. I really love the nice photography and your clear step-by-step instructions. As I always would like to learn Japanese home cooking, but not being able to read Japanese very well, your blog is almost like a gift for me! I wish you happy new year and very fruitful 2012 full of happiness. I’ll be following your blog closely this year too!
ps. I also entered a tweet!

Breaking my normal lurking to say that I found your blog last month (and subscribed thank you
) and I can’t believe you’ve only been going for one year! I love the recipes you are sharing, the descriptions and presentation are fabulous, and as a mad keen lover of home-style Japanese food I am feeling very inspired! Thank you (and your supportive hubby) for putting so much into this blog.
Happy New Year! I am very surprised that you have only been blogging for one year. I love your blog and read it daily (through google reader). Thanks for working so hard to make a good blog.
Your blog is wonderful, and the recipes are unique. I have a sweet tooth though, so more desserts is always awesome!
Happy Blogiversary, Nami! Your recipes are awesome!
I have referred to them over and over as I try to recreate some of the favorite dishes that I ate while living in Japan (92-02). Your attention to detail, especially in presentation, is superb; and yet the recipes are simplistic and easy to follow.
Thank you for bringing the art of Japanese cooking (and other) to out kitchens!
Congratulations Nami! You are amazing and do not have to change a thing. It has been a pleasure getting to know you and learn so much about your culture. I wish you continued success and look forward to more great recipes and awesome pictures.
I’m relatively new to your blog but I love all your recipes. Keep up the good work.
Many congratulations on your 1st anniversary! I absolutely love Just One Cookbook…it’s one of the most beautiful(the photos will make the best chefs drool!) and well organized blogs in the whole blogosphere

You’re the best Nami!!! I still remember when we first “met” through pur blogs. A very happy day because you are an inspiring, talented, and genuine person. I’ve learned so much from you and you have always been so generous with your time and knowledge….even answering silly questions I had as a novice blogger!
I know that exciting things are in store for your readers and fans as we head into 2012 and I always look forward to each and every one of your recipes!
Happy New Year to you and your family! Cheers, Terris

Happy New Year, Nami! It’s hard to think of a suggestion for improvement when your blog is already so great. But despite what you say about not being much of a baker or dessert maker, I would love to know more about Japanese desserts!
I love your blog so much! I just found it in time to make some delicious recipes before the New Year!!
I’d love to see some more about your family’s traditions, food or otherwise! I love reading about them when you post them!!
By the way, your recipes really ARE amazing!!

Very tempting recipes!
I love your blog! I’m planning to try many of your recipes in the new year. It would be cool to see a post about how to properly brew Japanese tea, if you have any tips.

Happy New Year and Happy 1st Blogiversary! So happy to hear your achievements in just one short year. You deserved it! You have a beautiful blog here. I love your blog the way it is. If you ask if there’s something you can improve, hm….maybe include some pictures as step by step instructions on how to make some dishes, especially those that are a bit more complicated. I’m new to Japanese cooking myself and always love to learn more. Guess I’m a very visual person so pictures really help.
Thank you for this wonderful giveaway! Have a wonderful time with your Mom and your family. Wish you all the best in 2012!
Just tweeted about this giveaway and here’s the link: https://twitter.com/#!/uTry_it/status/153916778618167297
Happy Blogiversary Nami. I love your blog and have been coming here since the first time I found it. Your recipes and your friendliness make this a fablous place. Your continual suppport of other bloggers certainly does not go unnoticed. You are a treasure. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Happy Blogversary! Wow first anniversary that’s an important milestone!
I’ve really enjoyed reading and following your blog. Mr Bao is a fan of Japanese food so i’ve been coming back for tips and advice.
My whole suggestion is – MORE DESSERT RECIPES hahaha just because I have a massive sweet tooth and whenever I go to Japan I love the desserts they guys have
All the best in 2012 and i’m sure you’re going to come up with new exciting recipes to share with us!
Happy blogiversary! Just keep those wonderful Japanese recipes coming. They’re what make your blog so unique and special.
Hey pretty lady! Happy new year! Congrats on all of your achievements in 2011 and I hope that 2012 will be an even better year for you! You blog is perfect as it is. You don’t necessarily need any more improvements. But if have time, you could update more often?
I am not much of a cook, but recently I’ve had some time off from work and have been trying out recipes from your blog. I’d love to see more “quick and easy” recipes!
Congrats of your 1st blogiversary!!! You’ve achieved so much in just one year and should be very proud of yourself! I love your blog and look forward to more amazing posts this year!
I’m following Just one cookbook via email
and have twittered it too!
Happy Blogiversary! I love your recipes and photos! Thank you!
Congratulations on the award and one year blogiversary, Nami. Although I’m a new subscriber, I’ve enjoyed all your posts and look forward to more in the new year. I don’t know what suggestions I could make to improve your blog as it’s pretty much superlative now. Having guest bloggers introduced me to people that I would have never found on my own and led me to the discovery of matcha powder and all its possibilities.
Thank you for the introduction of the New Year’s celebration in Japan. The mochi decoration is charming.
I hope the 2nd year of your blog is as successful as the first.
tweet-http://twitter.com/#!/ElenaIstomina/status/153952117512609793
I don’t really have suggestions. I think it’s more important to just do what you love and be kind to your readers!!
that’s my philosophy at least.
Happy New Year Nami and congratulations on your “blogiverasy”! Here it’s only the second day of 2012 and I’ve already learned a new word!
You certainly are deserving of the award, so congratulations on that as well! It’s been fun reading about the new years traditions of different cultures this year. I love the Japanese tradition with the decorations and the breaking of the rice cakes. In the southern US where I was raised it was always a pot of black-eyed peas on New Years day so even though I left the south years ago, I still follow the tradition. It hasn’t failed me yet.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful 2012 and I look forward to continuing to know you through our blogs and our food!
Congratulations Nami! You are such an inspiration to the rest of us. How to improve, yikes, is that possible? I think the only thing I’d like to see more of would be pics of you and the family. But this is coming from the lady who never posts pics of herself, so there you go. Lol!
Dear Nami
Congratulations on your first anniversary, you have achieved so much in one year! We would be happy if we can emulate just half of what you have achieved! Well done!
Congratulations on your first anniversary. I don’t have any suggestions for improvement – the pictures are great!
Happy New Year and Happy Blogiversary! Have always enjoyed your posts – food, photos, writings. Maybe you could share where you get your ingredients (esp. Japanese ingredients) from in your recipes so that we know where to buy good quality Japanese ingredients.
Happy New Year to you and your family, Nami!
Congratulations on the milestones and a very Happy New Year to you and the family
I can’t wait to read what is in store for you in 2012!!!
Congratulations on one year! I lived in Saitama for two years, any recipes that remind me of ‘home’ would be appreciated. Love your recipes.
Hi Nami, I can’t believe you’ve only been blogging for one year! Your blog looks and IS amazing! I can’t think of anything you could improve on – your photographs are lovely, recipes are great and easy to follow. Hope 2012 is a great year for you personally and for your blog!
Wow Nami!! I can’t believe your blog is only a year old!! I would have thought you were a super senior in the blogworld with the amount of readers you’ve gained and the wonderful pictures and professionalism of your website.

Happy Blogiversary and Happy New Year! I hope this year you will accomplish everything you dream about, as well in your blogging activities as in your family life.
You already work so hard with your blogging!
Japanese New Year’s celebration sounds very magic!
You are so kind to sponsor this giveaway! You are a New Year’s Santa Claus
I have no idea what you can improve in your blog. Frankly it’s perfect for me!
Maybe I could think of a way to enrich it… If you really want to add something I thought maybe developing the “pantry” section would be a good idea? I don’t know if I’m the only one, but I’m still completely lost in the Japanese grocery shop and shop assistants never know for example what are the differences between five different brands or sub-brands of sesame oil, chili oil or even mirin. I don’t even mention miso… When I know brands I finally find one I like and I stick to it, but sometimes they change the brands or run out of them and then I’m lost. It could be a part of a recipe post from time to time… It is just a small suggestion because you asked for it… I am not sure if other readers find it useful and if you find it feasible
Otherwise, your recipes, photos, explanations and your writing are all perfect and I don’t see anything that could be changed!
Have a nice time in San Diego and Happy New Year once more!

I forgot the suggestion: More giveaways
Suggestion: Keep the good work

Happy 1 year Blogiversary. I hope you have many more to come. You are such an inspiration to me and my “hobby” of cooking. I have a goal to cook 90-95% of your recipes. I would like to see more vegetarian and seafood recipes in the future. Happy New Year!
Congrats, happy blogaversary and Nappy New Year. Very nice mochi tradition.
Happy Anniversary to you and your wonderful blog! May you enjoy many more years to come
あけましておめでとう
I just found your blog recently and have enjoyed reading it. I particularly like the way you use images; they are very helpful and add great detail to the recipes.
As for suggestions … This might not be an issue for veteran followers of the blog, but it could be useful for newcomers like me: I noticed that I after I finish reading a post, I spend a lot of time scrolling to the top of the page to access the previous or next post. I would recommend placing the links to the next and previous posts at the end of the post before the comments begin rather than after the comments because with as many comments as your blog receives there tends to be a lot to scroll through before I reach the links. (Even though it’s easy to press “Home” or “End” to go to the top or bottom of the page, I tend to have my hand on the mouse while reading and start scrolling before I remember I can use the keyboard.)

Hi Nami,
Big congratulations on your blogiversary! I’m so happy I could discover your blog this year
If I could make any suggestions for your, I’d recommend a mobile theme for your blog. If I visit on my cellphone then it’s difficult to navigate on a much smaller screen. If you looked around for a good one you could certainly find one which supported all your current functionality, but was able to make it more mobile-friendly! (Then I could easily read it on the go
)
Happy anniversary and very happy New Year, Nami! You know I love your blog, right? Couldn’t think of a thing change a thing about! I look forward to many more of your posts!

I wish you more inspiration, more beautiful recipes and stunning pictures in 2012!
I’m so glad I’ve met you, your blog is so inspiring and amazingly rare treasure.
なみさん、あけましておめでとうございます!今年もよろしくお願いします^^ お正月はご家族と楽しく過ごしたようですね。
I really don`t feel I`m in the place to give you my opinion to improve your blog, because seriously, I`m the one who should learn a lot from you!
But, since you need some suggestion, I think it would be fun if you can introduce or feature food specialties or food-related cultures from different regions in Japan. Although I live in Japan, it seems impossible for me to visit every city here and enjoy the local gourmet and I think foodies from around the world who have interest in Japan and Japanese cuisine would enjoy learning about that from you.
Anyway, congratulations on your 1st blogiversary! You deserve a real big celebration on that!

Happy New Year and congrats on a successful year of blogging! I always look forward to what you post, not only because the food is great, but I learn a little about the culture behind the recipes. Keep up the great work!
I don’t have a criticism, but I do have a praise… I LOVE that you took the time (on several occasions) to email me when I asked a question in the comment section! I just thought that was so sweet of you to take the time to do that! Such a lovely personal touch. Congratulations on your anniversary, and may you be blessed with many more!

Congratulations on your blogiversary and also for being named a top blog — what an exciting start to the New Year! I enjoyed your history of the lucky rice cakes (we eat black-eyed peas for luck on New Year’s Day in the South) — so much fun learning about traditions! Congrats again — well deserved limelight!
I really love your website. I’ve already started cooking more at home as part of my resolution for a healthier me and always turn to your page!
As to how you can make it better… even though it’s perfect as is, I would LOVE to see more for bento ideas. With no creativity whatsoever mine always look so sad…. =/
I love reading your blog! I just enjoyed some New Years ozouni and nimono when I was with family as well. I know some of the basic Japanese foods but I would love to know more about the history/background of it!
I subscribe to your email!
My only suggestion is keep up the AWESOME work!!! Happy New Year!
Congratulations on your first blogversary, Nami! More power to your blog. I love old traditions. My Mum-in-laws tells us to always keep the old traditions alive so that the children are aware of of their culture. Happy new year to you and your family.

Nami, happy blog anniversary! It is amazing what you have accomplished in one year and with 2 young children too…you must me super mom! I love hearing about your Japanese customs. That is the amazing thing about blogging we can learn from everyone with different backgrounds and learn more about not just their food, but celebrations and customs. I love it! My daughter wants to live in Japan, but since that probably won’t happen very soon, it’s so nice visiting here.

I don’t think there is need for any improvement, really, but maybe a traditional Japanese dessert from time to time would be intriguing. Maybe mochi?

I’ve been in Honolulu for a couple of months visiting my Japanese sister-in-law, and I decided to cook more Japanese food. Your cookbook email is wonderful, simple and fun to read, good recipes, and it comes just often enough, not too often. It’s just perfect! I’d say for busy people, it’s helpful to keep it short, as you are doing. Thanks!

Do you have any clay pot recipes? Or a specific how-to for using a cleaver?
Hi Heather,
Just FYI, if you are talking about a big Chinese clever, that would be a good question for a Chinese person (Japanese people don’t use them.) If you are talking about a smaller called ‘Nakiri” then that is something we use. Just thought I would clarify that.
P.S. I once had a Chinese clever thinking it would be nice to learn how to use it but got very scared of it and gave it away

Hi Nami,
Welcome home! Happy New Year! Congratulations on your 1st Blogiversary. We tried your Sukiyaki recipe on New Years Day and loved it. I couldn’t find the chrysanthemum leaves, my market had chinese spinach, the leaves looked similar so I used it. Thanks for all you do, it is appreciated by your family and blog followers.
Congratulations, Nami! I just found your blog this morning, and I’m still at the computer, hours later, fixated on your site. The photos are adding pseudo calories but actually making me lose the calories as I stay away from the kitchen. Didn’t realize that I skipped the lunch today because I can’t take my eyes off your recipes and photos. Only my growling stomach alerted me to my time on the computer. I had lost interest in cooking after my kids grew up and moved away, but after visiting your blog, I’m getting very interested in cooking Japanese food, especially, once again. Thank you so much for doing that to me. My hubby will thank you, too!
Nami~!
I love your blog! I lived in Japan for several years and you have given me a way to recreate all my favorite foods~! Thanks so much! My only recommendation is that you teach us how to make a bento with your portrait sculpted from rice~! hahaha! Just Kidding!
Wishing you the best this NEW YEAR!
great site and blog
