Sesame Dressing 胡麻ドレッシング

Sesame Dressing 胡麻ドレッシング

My son loves homemade sesame dressing more than store-bought pre-made ones. I usually experiment with various recipes and this particular one is my husband's favorite because of the strong vinegar taste. If you prefer really fine and smooth taste, ground the sesame finer. Otherwise it's fine to leave the grounded sesame a bit coarse, it adds a new texture and dimension to the salad.

Japanese Potato Salad ポテトサラダ

Japanese Potato Salad ポテトサラダ

Japanese potato salad is very different from American ones. It uses mashed potato instead of potato chunks and the Japanese mayo gives it a slightly sweet flavor. The typical ingredients contains carrot, ham, cucumber, egg, and corn. Growing up in Japan I always looked forward to dinner if I knew my mother was making potato salad that day.

Green Bean Shiraae いんげんの白和え

Green Bean Shiraae いんげんの白和え

It's been a while since I posted a side dish so I want to share a popular green bean recipe. Side dishes (Osouzai, お惣菜) are predominately vegetables. As I had mentioned in my previous posts, typical Japanese meal consists of a bowl of rice, a bowl of miso soup, the main dish, and 1-2 side dishes. A popular way to prepare side dish is Shiraae, mixing lightly-cooked vegetables with crumbled tofu, miso, and sesame seeds. Spinach and green beans are commonly used for Shira-ae dish.

Apple Salad りんごのサラダ

Apple Salad りんごのサラダ

The Japanese love mayo, we enjoy mayo with a wide variety of Japanese food ranging from deep fried food, okonomiyaki (Japanese Pizza), Yakisoba (Japanese stir fry noodle), sushi, to salad. This simple apple salad is mayo based but it is super yummy. The tartness of fresh apple mixed in with raisin and just a bit of lemon balances out the mayo perfectly.
